Captain America’s jet, Freedom’s Flight, is an unconventional airframe based on recent advances in composite plastics technology combined with conventional air-breathing jet technology. The all-flexing wing is a concept that dates back to the original Wright Flyer, but has had to wait for this decade to be fully incorporated into today’s high-performance jet aircraft. The jet also incorporates the latest in fly-by-light technology, which is fly-by-wire utilizing fiber-optic conduits as a computer-to-actuator link. The use of fly-by-light, or computer-aided flight surface control, allows for unconventional, non-aerodynamic airfoils to fly.”
