From Iron Man's Iron Manual Page 4:

Micro-machining the focusing magnets used in the palm repulsors was the first serious 3ˇD modeling that worked. Stark Industries had finished developing an early parallel processing computer, my SI9000, and it needed a proper shakedown cruise. I'd say, two folded, Yˇshaped magnets that need to wrap around each other to form a perfect sphere and with atomic resolution was a tough enough machining assignment. The tricky part was using etching solvents on raw silicon. Same technology as integrated circuit manufacturing, but computer-aided. The actual shape is just like Leggo block construction because the silicon planes are stepped.
