Survival Gear:

“Stuffed into that big old trunk are gallons of water and gasoline (in vapor-proof cans), boxes of GI MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) and compressed food-stuffs made by a Norwegian outfit called Compact A.S. Then I have a weIl-filled tool bag, a spare set of Special Forces mountain boots with laced in zippers. a new 12-cell car battery (wired into the trunk and switched from the dashboard).

Down by the rear tire (I carry 2 spares with patch kits) is a Tacpak duffle with a 5-prong grappling hook and 150′ of 11mm Kemmantle rope. On my little table, where l go over things to familiarize myself with their locations in the various bags, is my WWII metal canteen, a rolled-up map case of my planned hiding areas, my big Brunton Mil-Spec compass, a Katadyn water purifier (expensive. but nothing else is nearly as good), several angle-head GI flashlights. and my little cook- stove — a multifuel Peak-1.

Not least is a Nitro-Pak Medic First Aid Kit, my trusty Nam era Survival tool Individual — which has helped hack my way through endless underbrush, and a Field Surgical Kit in case l need to pull a thorn from the paw of some bear.

And just to soothe my nerves when I need to fall asleep is my Emergency War Surgery book.”
