From the Punisher Armory No. 1 Inside Back Cover:

The Punisher is a vigilante, that dangerous sort of criminal who believes he knows how to frame his own justice, ignoring the laws of other men.

Because we know about the Punisher’s origin we are privy to his inner turmoil as we are to almost no other vigilante. We may be able to understand, though not condone, how Frank Castle came to be judge, jury and executioner.

My goal has been to delve into the needs of such a man, to shape his world, to think as a hunter of men does, to anticipate the high and often very low-tech dangers and obstacles that face him. The challenge is being as accurate as possible, to present the specialists’ feeling in a reasonably clear fashion and maybe entertain a little in the bargain. Developing this still life-with-notes format has been ticklish as far as balancing the look and information on each page. Involving the reader in the story told by the objects, quite apart from the Punisher’s own written thoughts, has been a conscious effort.

My thanking the real specialists would be an endless task; they are aware of their influence and my gratitude. I hope that I have properly mirrored their enthusiasms for the art and technology of warfare, hunting, sport shooting, espionage, police methodology and clandestine operation philosophy. Thanks also to John Wellington, that a young man in the comic shop who requested a MAC-1O, and naturally Don and Rob, all of whom worked very hard on my behalf …
